Improving Productivity and Reducing Rework by Establishing a Built-in Quality (BIQ) Program

The standard construction quality process typically consists of Quality Planning, Quality Assurance (QA), and Quality Control (QC).  Within the construction industry, the focus in the past has been on QA(proactive) and QC (retroactive); Built-In Quality (BIQ) is a new method that uses a real-time, interactive process to increase quality and reduce rework. The traditional approach to project QA/QC places the greatest emphasis on quality at the end of the construction process – after the completion of construction installation – followed by inspection, then acceptance/rejection of the work. A BIQ program instead focuses on the initial stages of a quality process by first identifying customer expectations, converting these expectations into requirements, developing design operations, and then performing the work. The purpose of this research is to prepare electrical contractors to develop and implement a BIQ program.
