Student Passport Initiative Will Benefit International Communties

An ELECTRI International jury has selected two NECA Student Chapters to present their Student Passport Initiative proposals during the ELECTRI Council’s July meeting in Toronto.
The Penn State University team has designed a photovoltaic array that would run a water pump in the community of Oak Ridge, on the island of Roatán, Honduras, providing water to hundreds in the community. Students from various majors and backgrounds will gain hands-on experience in photovoltaic array design and installation while continuing to build upon the university’s existing relationship with members of Roatán’s community including the local electrical contracting mentor, Vegas Electric. If selected, Penn State plans to use this project as a model to show students, faculty, and alumni the importance of continuing to push for sustainability and renewable energy both in the United States and internationally.
The Purdue University team proposes partnering with Lidia Saavedra de Ortega, in Managua, Nicaragua, the polyclinic for retirees located in the small neighborhood of San Sebastian. The clinic, originally constructed to address local health concerns, is now the only clinic in Nicaragua providing health services to an average of 6,500 retired men and women per month. Because the facility is powered by a fluctuating and unreliable electrical grid, much of its expensive and delicate medical equipment has been damaged. The student team recommends an immediate, if incremental, remedy represented by a stand-alone, roof-mounted 6 kW photovoltaic system that is sized for future expansion and storage capacity. If the Purdue team is selected and puts into operation a system supplying clean, dependable power, the team then intends to design a larger, stored energy system for the Polyclinic.
The team that is selected as ELECTRI’s Inaugural Student Passport competition winner will receive a financial award of up to $20,000 towards project expenses and equipment. Students will work closely with ELECTRI Council members and industry allies throughout the planning and installation process.
