Building Information Modeling for Electrical Contractors: Current Practice And Recommendations

Building Information Modeling (BIM) is the process of generating and managing building data during its life cycle. Typically it uses three-dimensional, real-time, dynamic building modeling software to increase productivity in building design and construction. BIM is a process which goes far beyond switching to new software. It requires changes to the definition of traditional architectural phases and more data sharing than is common with most architects and engineers. The process produces the Building Information Model (also abbreviated BIM), which encompasses building geometry, spatial relationships, geographic information, and quantities and properties of building components.

Electrical Contractors are often short-changed during the MEP coordination process due to their under-utilization of technology, such as BIM, which can be used to assist them in performing pre-planning and pre-fabrication; all of which improve overall productivity. This project included conducting a survey to determine the best management practices (BMP’s) and outlining the benefits of using BIM for Electrical Contractors. In addition, recommendations and guidelines, specific to Electrical Contractors, are proposed for implementing BIM to assist in the MEP coordination, pre-planning, and pre-fabrication processes.

The research project was designed with the following objectives and the goal of meeting the outcomes listed below:

Specific Project Objectives

1.      Increase awareness of technology available for use by Electrical Contractors in the MEP coordination, pre-fabrication, and pre-planning processes.

2.      Provide recommendations for Electrical Contractors to perform MEP coordination which will incorporate pre-fabrication, field assembly methods, and pre-planning.

3.      Determine guidelines for Electrical Contractors to implement Building Information Modeling.

Desired outcomes of this project

1.      Survey of the best management practices and benefits of using Building Information Modeling for Electrical Contractors.

2.      Publication outlining guidelines and recommendations, specific for Electrical Contractors, for implementing BIM.

3.      Rules for MEP coordination, specific for Electrical Contractors, which incorporate standard field installation methods and encourage pre-fabrication practices.
