STUDENT INITIATIVES and ELECTRI SHINE AT CONVENTION

October 3, 2019

ELECTRI International shined the spotlight on student leaders from across the nation as NECA contractors, Chapter leaders and industry allies gathered for the recent NECA Convention in Las Vegas.

The ELECTRI International Green Energy Challenge was well-attended and those present witnessed one of the closest competitions ever judged by the all-volunteer competition jury. Three NECA Student Chapter teams representing Illinois Institute of Technology, Iowa State University and University of Toronto each presented their team project. After tabulating the judges’ scoring for each team, first place went to Iowa State University.

The ELECTRI Council meeting included the students’ participation as the audience learned first-hand what the Student Chapters had gained by participating in the GEC competition. In the discussion that followed, Council members offered the students encouragement for their continued participation.

Michael Klee, Cal-Pol, gave a fantastic presentation about the recent completion of Cal-Poly’s Student Passport Initiative, Ghana Photovoltaic Project.  Michael had designed and built a solar-powered refrigeration and ice producing facility to better preserve the catch-of-the-day for market in a local fishing village in Ghana.

Dr. Anthony Perrenoud, Oklahoma University, gave the Council a final production update featuring the first five videos produced for the project Electrical Management Training (EMT) Videos on Change Orders. The high-quality project videos feature interviews and testimony from electrical contractors and project managers on key topics related to change order mitigation.

In addition to working meetings with the Development Enhancement Committee, the Program Review Committee, and the Talent Initiative Committee, all Council members and invited guests enjoyed the annual ELECTRI reception. Everyone enjoyed being together and appreciated the musical entertainment provided by the talented Electric Bellas Violin Trio.

At the Convention Trade Show, the ELECTRI booth, adjacent to TECHTOPIA, gave visitors the opportunity to learn more about ELECTRI from staff and to review a variety of ELECTRI publications on display.
