The Green Energy Challenge (GEC) engages university students and faculty advisors in an annual event that fosters meaningful student interaction with their community and NECA member companies.

About the Challenge

For this annual event, students design and then present their approach and solution to energy-efficient installations at a specific type of facility.  NECA Student Chapter teams demonstrate their ability to analyze particular electrical construction management “problems” and create a comprehensive plan and budget for an appropriate retrofit. Students are challenged to develop technical skills that are vital to careers in electrical construction and professional skills including time management, written communication, and oral presentation.

For the technical portion of the GEC competition, each Student Team simulates all of the details of a potential project for an actual organization/entity within the community. The GEC is not a competition in which the actual construction work is accomplished by the winning team.

The top three student teams are invited to the Annual NECA Convention to make oral presentations of their projects. The jury evaluates both the substance and the presentation.

For the community service requirement of the competition, student teams must create a volunteer plan of interaction with the client organization and volunteer their time to benefit the mission of the organization.

A jury of contractors and industry partners evaluate written proposals. The top three student teams are then invited to the NECA Convention to make oral presentations of their projects. The jury evaluates both the substance and the presentation. ELECTRI International provides financial awards to the winning school and assists with the cost of bringing the three finalist teams to the oral presentations.

All NECA Student Chapter teams are invited to enter a poster summarizing their Green Energy Challenge project experience.  Posters will be judged by members of ELECTRI International and displayed at the NECA Convention.  Prizes will be awarded for the top three posters.
